HOW TO: REGISTER SOLE PROPRIETORSHIP BUSINESS AT THE DTI

If you are planning to start a business, here's exactly what you need to know to have your business registered.

For your easy reference, I will also be putting my rating for every process involved to let you know how easy or hard the process is. I will also give you an approximate time you will be spending for each process. More importantly, how much it will cost you.

TASK RATING SCHEME:
I will be using 1 to 5. 1 being the easiest and 5 being the hardest.

Note: Assuming you are already done with your Business Plan and you've got your finances set, let's go and have your business registered!

Register your Business Name with the DTI
TASK RATING: 2.5 out of 5
TIME: 30 mins. to an hour (depending on your internet connection and how adept you are in typing)
THINGS YOU NEED: A computer/laptop, internet connection, printer, paper. At this moment, having a GCASH is an advantage as DTI currently only accepts payment thru GCASH or at any DTI outlet nationwide.
AMOUNT: Various (Minimum of Php215.00)

This is probably one of the easiest steps you would go through. Thanks to technology, you don't have to line up in long queues to secure your Business Name Certification from the DTI. Just follow these steps and you will not go wrong!

  • Go to this web address: http://www.bnrs.dti.gov.ph/web/guest/registration
  • Click New Application button at the left column

  • Scroll down and click the I Agree button.

  • Fill Out Purpose of Business Page
    • Choose the scope/coverage of your business operations:
      • If you are operating within one barangay, you will only pay Php200.00
      • If you are operating within the City, you will pay Php500.00
      • If you are going to operate within the Region, you will pay Php1,000.00
      • If you will operate within the Country, you are going to pay Php2,000.00
        • Add Php15.00 flat rate documentary stamp
        • Note: If you choose to operate within the Region or down to the Barangay level, you have to input the Region where you will be operating at. A dropdown list will appear.
    • Encode your proposed Business Name, and check if it's available
      • You have to ensure that you have read the terms and conditions stated in the previous page. In choosing a business name, you must not intentionally make your business name similar to already existing business names to avoid confusion. (Eg. Starbucks to Starbaks)

    • Encode the business owner's details

    • Encode your residence address details

    • Choose your payment option - I recommend GCASH
    • Choose your preferred manner of getting the DTI Business Name Certification - I recommend downloading it.
    • Check that all the details you encoded are correct, then click Submit.

  • Upon successful submission, you will be routed to the TRN (Transaction Reference Number) Acknowledgement page. You may want to download the PDF file in case you opted to pay for it at any DTI Teller, otherwise, click Continue to Online Payment button.

Note: Unless you have an active GCASH account with Globe Telecoms, you won't be able to proceed to Online Payment. For this purpose, I have actually bothered downloading the GCASH app from the Google Play Store and visited the Globe shop to activate my GCASH. Visit this site for more details.
  • Soon after payment has been confirmed (usually takes a few minutes) you will be able to download a PDF file of your business certification from DTI duly signed by the current DTI Secretary. Just download and print!

QUICK FACT! Did you know that your DTI Business Name Registration is valid for 5 years? So, for those of you, I recommend that you register your business under National Level to protect yourself from any other Business Name Takes out there!
